The BT Hub seems to be struggling lately—either it’s failing or we’re reaching its connection limits. Devices are having trouble connecting and often need a restart. I’m considering swapping it out, but I’m not sure what’s the best path forward. We have a variety of gadgets like tablets, phones, smart TVs, and Alexa devices in the house. Cheers, Lewis

The focus was mainly on the BT Hub swap, which is what caused my slight concern. I've seen some older discussions suggesting Netgear may not be very compatible with existing BT setups. Cheers, Lewis

The router needs to connect with any modem, but there seems to be a problem. You’ll likely require a different modem. Which ones does your ISP recommend?

I've encountered this before. The specific modem or router combo depends on the technology in use. Standard VDSL won't work with a gfast line and vice versa, even though they share the same copper wiring. Your package name usually indicates the required modem type.

Didn't mention this section before. You can use any router that supports VLAN tagging and PPOE, especially if you also have a modem. For big houses where WiFi struggles upstairs, consider a mesh Wi-Fi system with a router—this offers better reliability and speed. If you're on a budget, go with Ubiquiti gear. I prefer mesh systems but it really depends on your situation and how much you enjoy customizing.

Thanks for the assistance, it's reassuring to know I'm not alone. The setup seems to include a BT Smart Hub of type A, and my package is listed as "Your BT Broadband" which currently features fibre with BT Halo 1.

You've confirmed your regular fibre connection to the cabinet broadband. You can either use a router that includes a VDSL modem, or opt for a separate router with VLAN support as mentioned. If you need a dedicated modem, models like the Drayek Vigor 130 or Huawei Echolife units with Openreach branding work well. I tend to favor Huawei devices since they handle issues like VDSL sync more smoothly compared to some alternatives. The login details remain consistent: username [email protected], password can be left blank or use "Bt". Need any router suggestions?

The issue lies with the modem's ability to handle VLAN tagging, not the router itself. The router just needs to support PPPoE. Personally, I use a Zyxel VMG-3925-B10B as the modem and an OpenWRT-flashed Home Hub 5A. The former is reliable, though the latter might have some G.INP problems on the ECI trial. Generally, Zyxel VMG8924-B10A or VMG1312-B10A are better choices. Even the older HG612 3B works but may be outdated and could have worn capacitors if used for a while.

We should go all in with one device instead of splitting it between a modem and router. It’s much easier to manage and won’t cause issues when your setup gets busy. I’m ready to invest as long as it stays convenient and reliable. Thanks for the support, Lewis!
