Can he access a TTY terminal smoothly? Reinstalling Unity could help.

I've never encountered this before. It seems icons are missing as well. Pressing Ctrl+Alt+F1 will direct him to the terminal for uninstalling and reinstalling Unity. I'm curious if he tried installing and then removing a different desktop before running the auto-remove command. Remember, he had auto remove break things in the past.
