Ubuntu version compatible with i7-10700 GPU via IGPU
I was running Debian Buster on my laptop for a while. Now I replaced the desktop without any operating system. When I tried to install Debian again, it didn’t work (possibly due to graphics problems). I’m now considering Ubuntu and need to find the right version that will run smoothly without issues. My system specs are: Intel i7 10700, MSI B460 Tomahawk, max UHD 630 (IGPU). I’m unsure which Ubuntu release will work best. Since I’m on a budget and using costly internet, I’d appreciate recommendations on the most suitable Ubuntu version to download and install. Thank you ahead!
Debian includes drivers for Intel graphics by default, whether you're using an older 920 model or the newest 10900. For the most recent Ubuntu version (20.04 is the latest LTS), additional details are required to provide assistance.
Intel and AMD Graphics rely on the kernel and Mesa build, while CPUs depend on the kernel version. The impact varies based on changes between generations. Intel's site mentions a CPU released in Q2 2020, aligning with Ubuntu 20.10. If there have been no major updates since then, Ubuntu LTS should work. Test Ubuntu LTS first; if issues arise, try 20.10.
I was crafting a general remark since the problem isn’t clear. My comment was about adopting the newest LTS version, not suggesting reverting to older systems like Ubuntu 12.04. These kernels come pre-installed with features such as i915, nouveau, amdgpu, etc.—they usually support VGA display at a minimum. You can then address driver or library issues from there. The 10700 uses the UHD630, which has remained consistent since Coffee Lake, so it should function with 18.04. Mesa is intended for 3D acceleration (OpenGL, Vulkan, etc.), so the solution still hinges on identifying the exact concern. Don’t rush to the newest kernel just to patch problems; installing a package or library into an LTS release often resolves dependency issues more reliably.
Added via third-party tool, recently updated. Everything functions smoothly now. Appreciate your help!
