My computer froze, so I tried to shut it down and restart, but it didn’t work. It showed a black screen or a blinking underscore. I’m using Ubuntu 20.04.2 LTD (GNU/Linux 5.8.0-50-generic x84_64). I’m currently in the terminal, but that’s it—I need to finish my classes and midterms soon. Anyone have any advice?

I can start up from GRUB. You should have terminal access. When the laptop stopped working, you were likely trying to resolve an issue or troubleshoot a problem.

I'm not sure what you're referring to by booting into grub. If you mean accessing the menu with options like Ubuntu Advanced Options, but pressing 'Ubuntu' instead of the actual command leads to a blank screen, then using Ctrl+Alt+F2 gave you terminal access for downloading movies to Plex Media Server, but it froze during the process.

Sure, I can attempt to disable quiet boot and check for any error messages. Also, I’ll test different kernels if possible.

I don’t understand how to do it, but can you ask for help? I’m 13 years old.

In the grub menu, select the desired kernel, then press "e". Scroll to the section beginning with "linux" and remove the word "quiet" if present. After that, press ctrl + x to check for errors.

When you power up your PC, the Grub menu appears. This is exactly what you're referring to. It will display a layout similar to this:

The system displayed the boot command list, then launched and the Ubuntu icon appeared on the screen.
