you have a bootable ubuntu installation on a usb drive. after formatting and installing, you followed all the steps carefully. when you restart and unplug the usb, it shows the ssd is not recognized and asks to reboot because no os is present. this usually happens if the partition wasn't properly mounted or if there was an issue during installation. try mounting the ssd with a proper device manager option, or ensure the usb is properly connected and recognized. if the problem persists, check the usb connection or contact support.

The configuration left partitions set up automatically or was adjusted by you yourself?

Determine the target device for the boot loader installation. Also, confirm whether you're using UEFI or legacy mode during setup.

I only changed it into one partition. When it reached the installation stage, I picked an alternative option instead of the SSD.

This setup won't function with UEFI BIOS. UEFI requires its own partition for the bootloader components.

Delete the disk, then install Ubuntu which will reinstall and set up the proper partition layout.

I have several hard drives and must confirm it picks the SSD instead of USB or other storage options.

Disconnect everything, set up, then reconnect them.
