I haven't tested 20.10 yet, but 20.04 performed well

What components are needed? If you're upgrading, a 20.10 is usually sufficient, though it probably won't affect gameplay much otherwise.

I started with Focal and switched to Groovy right after it came out. I prefer the newest version, but Focal works well for most tasks.

I steer clear of desktop shortcuts like the plague, so I can’t assist with that directly. Just saving apps to favorites (the left sidebar) should meet your requirements well.
