I am using a dual boot setup with Ubuntu 16.04 and Windows 10. On Ubuntu I encountered issues with sound, so I followed the help guide and ran several commands. Unfortunately, I realized I didn’t have a pulse folder, which caused unexpected deletions. My custom dock also stopped working properly. Numix Icons were protected from deletion, which helped preserve them. It seems my Windows partition wasn’t affected as I expected. I don’t have any backups and can’t store one on my PC due to space constraints. Additionally, the hard drive sounds problematic both when booting into Linux and using Windows. Anyone have any suggestions or solutions? Your support would be greatly appreciated.

This should only remove the pulse folder. Are you sure about which files it deletes? You might recover some files using photorec, but a complete drive image is best for backups. Consider making copies on an external hard drive.

I'm not sure which files were removed. It cleared all of your dock presets, though.

You’ll need to reinstall. Strange noises from the hard drive suggest it’s near failure.

Backups are absolutely essential! (Especially with all the crypto and ransomware issues lately) I’m not predicting you’ll ever be targeted, but keeping your important files elsewhere—besides your main computer—is probably what will protect you someday. External storage is a budget-friendly option for this purpose.
