I'm considering upgrading my home network and thinking about getting a Dream Machine Pro. I noticed it offers a hard drive option, but I'm curious how it functions. Since it's not PoE, would it be better to use Ubiquity cameras connected via Ethernet to the DMP for recording instead?

Using the UDMP or UDMSE involves installing a drive and buying Unifi cameras; recordings go to the hard drive. The UDMSE provides PoE output for cameras and APs, plus a compact SSD that helps when you have limited cameras and want motion-triggered recording. With the UDMP, you’ll need POE Injectors or an extra POE switch to supply power to the cameras.

No, you don't need to buy cameras that use Ethernet. You can connect them via PoE (Power over Ethernet) and then power them from a wall outlet. The se has PoE so the setup works similarly regardless of the model.

We have two camera kinds: wired ones needing PoE, and wireless models that draw power from a wall socket—actually they use USB. Most Ethernet cameras don’t support a DC-In feature.

I really like Ubiquiti Networking but think their cameras aren't great. I'd prefer using Blue Iris on another PC with my own cameras and PoE devices instead.

It's tough to explain the cost and adding more cameras feels like a huge investment. My place is already packed with Wi-Fi, so I’ll keep going with what I have.

It's tough to explain why I'm adding a PoE camera and spending a lot of money. My place is packed with Wi-Fi routers, so I'll keep that in mind. For some reason, I can't respond without including this detail. Using the HD drive on the dump would mean installing a PoE injector and linking a camera? Would Wi-Fi cameras capture footage via UDP?
