I found the subject, but adding an NFC card isn't possible in Apple Wallet yet. It seems you should enable Apple Pay first. You can only attach a credit card at this time.

Seems there’s nothing available on iPhone right now, unless you create your own fix

Yes, it's possible he could have attached an NFC sticker or card to the back of his iPhone.

He was sure about it. A notification would appear whenever he opened the door, though it might just be a coincidence.
