I just upgraded my home network to 900mb/s. I checked my internet speed on one computer and got download speeds of 380 mb/s, but another computer in the house only reached up to 90mb/s. Both are connected directly to the router using the same cable, yet the speeds are so much lower than expected. I’m trying to figure out why.

They are essentially the same hardware with matching network interfaces. The actual data transfer rate is constrained by each device's adapter capabilities. A port that only supports 10/100 Mbps will cap performance at roughly 100 Mbps. It's also important to remember that the speeds you receive from your internet provider are maximum theoretical values, while real-world connections typically reach about 400 Mbps.

No, gigabit doesn't reach 400Mbps, that's incorrect. Unless you're using a very outdated router with a basic chipset, you'll likely see speeds above 880Mbps on a modern gigabit connection.

WiFi performance depends on distance and band choice. 2.4GHz travels farther but with slower speeds, while 5GHz offers higher speeds but shorter range. Interference and environmental factors affect both bands. If devices aren’t hardwired, expect reduced performance. On AX, I achieved around 750/800 Mbps about 10 feet from the access point. Edit: The wifi aspect seems overlooked—I probably forgot about a hardwired connection. What model router are you using?

The device with reduced performance does not feature a gigabit NIC. It is not connected using only 10/100 speeds under any circumstances.

Interesting. With the proper equipment, my ISP can deliver 1.4 Gbps down and 45 Mbps up. That probably means you're mistaken about it.

I was mentioning the Wi-Fi performance in that case. That's correct. Most home ISP routers cannot exceed around 400 Mbps for typical devices using "gigabit" Wi-Fi.
