I’m exploring the feasibility of my concept right now. I’m still in the early planning phase and haven’t gathered all the necessary gear. Just wondering if it’s even doable. My setup would include a main network, a private network for one computer and PoE IP cameras, and eventually upgrade all security cameras to IP models. My computer would handle media streaming, browsing, and daily tasks, while also capturing footage from the cameras. I want to make sure the IP cameras remain inaccessible from the external network once installed. I understand I should probably opt for a dedicated NVR instead of a standalone DVR, but I’m not sure about that approach. I’ll need to add either a single or dual-port NIC since my motherboard only supports one port.

It's feasible, yet there are concerns about connecting IP cameras to your typical home network.

Don’t expose them to the outside network to avoid hacking risks. A careless person like me would likely just connect and disconnect the Ethernet cables. Hackers could easily breach your PC and gain access to the cameras if both are connected simultaneously.

It would mainly be a chance to learn something new while also feeling a bit safer. Also, having cameras on the main network might use more bandwidth, which could slow things down. I'm also using the computer as a media server, and right now I have four clients accessing it at once in our home.

They should feel a bit safer, but always lock passwords on IP cameras even if they’re private. Malware can still reach them through your PC. This will use more bandwidth, though. If you run a Plex server, upstream matters less. And it’s unlikely to affect a 1Gb connection much.
