This setup runs on a fairly old platform. I created this during Dazmode's first major Canadian Build Mod Comp event. I upgraded from an i5 to an i7 7700K and managed to push it to 5.0GHz easily. Want more performance? I added another 560MHz in parallel with the original one. Positioned that 140MHz into the cooling system at the center of the PC to circulate cool air through the motherboard and RAM. I also replaced the Peltier plates with smaller versions. As the 300W chips kept failing despite being fully enclosed by the CPU blocks, I installed aftermarket water blocks—just copper tubes filled with aluminum heat spreader. These now accommodate two additional 300W plates for better cooling. They’re powered by a dedicated supply unit connected to a fan header on my Maximus IX Extreme; they cut power during idle but activate when needed for heating or load. With all this in mind, here’s the situation. Ambient air is around 23°C, water temps are 19°C, and hot water reaches 32°C. CPU idle sits at 22°C. During stress tests, it handles up to 80-95°C, but drops instantly to about 25°C once testing stops. That tells me the mono-blocks are working well. My final thought? Should I cover the CPU or leave it open? I’d rather leave it uncovered, but I’m worried about contacting a non-covered CPU—like watching an old JayzTwoCents video where he tests CPU cooling benefits.
I've handled both of these. Lapping isn't great. Delidding comes with a big challenge later on. If you're planning the final stretch, make sure you get it done properly.
Lapping offers minimal benefit unless your CPU has significant design flaws. To genuinely boost temperatures, you should isolate the die. If you plan to isolate, separate the IHS, reinstall it, and expect a reduction of around 10°C without major changes to the package. Direct die performance is preferable, though on a 7700k it’s often unnecessary. For higher gains, consider purchasing a dedicated die block or aftermarket module and adjusting the mounting hardware—both add extra cost. A simple delid and liquid metal setup can be achieved with a razor blade and a few dollars for a tube, and given the substantial temperature improvement, it seems worthwhile.
