They were discussing Assassins Creed Syndicate and Call of Duty Black Ops III. One was bought on PC, the other on PS4. I haven’t played either series on PC before. Based on what I found, I’m considering ACS for PS4 and COD for PC. Does this sound reasonable to those who have played these games?

Sure, you can just wait for the reviews. I get what you're saying—it's tough.

FPS titles shine most on PC, making COD a great choice for PC and ACS on PS4, despite ACS possibly not living up to expectations.

It's tough dealing with kids and the console/PC debate on why things are being split up. I really liked Assassin's Creed Unity on the PS4—it was a great experience. It wasn't until after finishing it that I appreciated not having it on my PC. That's how my perspective formed. Regarding the upcoming gifts, they're likely to be ordered soon.
