Hey, I’ve been using 4x8 GB drives for a while now. One day my RAM failed and I ended up with only 3x8 GB sticks until I get them back from warranty. I saw in one of Linus’ videos that running dual-channel can merge all channels into one, but it wasn’t clear if that was the case or just because it was a single channel setup. Right now I’m wondering if it’s worth removing the third stick while you wait—probably what I’m thinking.

I don’t understand your system details, so I’ll keep my answer broad.
One stick works as a single channel, usually placed in the A1 slot near the CPU, which is the standard choice on most modern boards.
Two sticks together use dual channel, often filling A2 and B2 or the second and fourth slots from the CPU, depending on the board.
Three sticks in any slots will always result in single channel mode.
Four sticks also operate in dual channel with all slots filled, distributing two sticks per channel.

You're comparing different storage configurations to understand how data flow changes. It looks like you're evaluating whether using all data in one lane maximizes performance versus spreading it across lanes. Regarding the performance question, a dual-channel setup with two 8GB drives offers better throughput than a single 16GB drive in dual channel.

What I was about to say made me a bit unclear.

It varies based on how you assess results. Occasionally one channel excels while another shines. At times, four sticks outperform two.

Discovered this clip about dual versus single storage options. I’d be surprised if 16 GB outperforms 24 GB, though, since the comparison depends on how you define it.

Consider the amount of RAM required; if it's less than 16 GB, dual-channel would be ideal.
