Only the 9600k allows dal channel memory. I’ll just install two sticks for dual channel.

You won't have dual-channel performance even with four RAM sticks installed. The system will still use its bandwidth in a single-channel mode.

your motherboard supports four channels, but the cpu isn't. in your area it's affordable to buy two 8gb kits or one 16gb kit. latency is a bit lower with four 8gb units. somerandomtechboy suggests that using four 8gb sticks might stress the imc, but i'm not sure if that's true or if it will work fine like dual channels.

Adding more sticks creates another dual channel, switching between the groups. Most systems with quad channel support have eight RAM slots and a dedicated CPU slot for high-speed CPUs. Regardless, the CPU determines performance; you won’t get true quad channel unless your motherboard is designed for it. This can put extra strain on the IMC, especially if you’re pushing RAM speeds above 3600MHz while using four sticks. If you’re not aiming for such high speeds, you should be fine. A good board with sufficient capacity and speed limits will handle it without problems. For overclocking 32GB+ to 3600MHz, using two sticks instead of four is advisable, as a single quad channel server-grade CPU won’t suffice. The motherboard must also support the required configuration.
