Hello everyone, just purchased a new build like this: processor Intel Xeon x5460 @3.16 ghz, Harpertown, 45nm, core voltage 1.184v. Mainboard Gigabyte EP43T-UD3L Rev. 1.0, BIOS Award Version F9. Memory total 16 GB, 4 slots @SLOT: DDR3 PC3-12800, 4 GB, Windows 10 PRO VGA. Cooling system NVIDIA Ge Force 9500 GT with deep cooling ice edge mini fs v @2.0. My questions are:

1. After Windows boots (without running any apps), what temperature readings do you see?
- Core #0: Min 58°C, Max 64°C
- Core #1: Min 58°C, Max 64°C
- Core #2: Min 62°C, Max 64°C
- Core #3: Min 62°C, Max 64°C
Running stress tests up to 100% usage can push temps to about 84°C. Is this normal? Is it okay to keep it this way for daily use?

2. Any advice on overclocking the CPU for stable daily performance? A beginner's guide would be helpful. Thanks!

The idle times look quite long... however, since it's outdated equipment, you might want to refinish the CPU with fresh thermal paste.

I discovered this on AliExpress and was eager to learn more about its performance and quality, so I created it. However, surprisingly, the temperature was off.

I recently purchased the same processor too. My setup uses a GA-G31M-ES2L motherboard. Initially, I asked for SLBBA (E0) stepping, but the seller sent me SLANP (C0). After returning, I requested the original SLBBA I wanted. Before sending it back, I tested the C0 stepping version on an x5460 and found it to be fine at stock speed. However, it ran hot—temperatures climbed to 60–70°C during idle and 80+ under load. At that time, I was using an Intel stock cooler. The stable overclock reached 3.61GHz (380x9.5), but the heat spiked near 100°C at full load. Last weekend I got the x5460 with E0 stepping and used a Chinese 6-heatpipe tower cooler. Temperatures stayed below 50°C during idle around 70% load. Overclocking became unstable; stable only up to 4GHz, then temps exceeded 80°C. Benchmarks dropped compared to lower speeds, and performance started dropping once temperatures hit about 78°C. Eventually I settled for 3.7GHz (390x9.5) with a max temperature around 75°C. Given the age of these components, it seems unlikely I’ll invest further. Maybe swapping a better thermal paste would help. My room stays quite warm—28–33°C ambient. Pairing it with a GTX 750 non-Ti works okay for gaming at 720p.
