You're planning to assemble a new PC in two weeks and are checking if your Windows 7 installation will work. The product key you entered is marked as invalid, which is common when using a bootcamp setup. You can request a fresh key from Microsoft or use an older version of Windows that matches the key requirements. Since you're aiming to upgrade to Windows 10, ensure the new copy you choose supports that version. As a Mac user without prior Windows experience, it’s best to follow official installation guides and avoid third-party keys to prevent security issues. Let me know if you need help finding a compatible key or setup steps.

You can use the key you bought at the store. If it's an OEM version, it won't work—you'll need to buy a new one. You can find affordable Windows 7 keys online for as little as $20 and then upgrade to a 10-bit version.

You can check if it's an OEM product by looking at its serial number or manufacturer details. Avoid using keys from grey markets to prevent security risks. If the current version doesn’t fit, purchasing a fresh Windows 10 copy is a safe option.

It might have come preassembled with the OEM label, or if bought from platforms such as Newegg it could have been marked as OEM—checking the seller would clarify.

It was purchased directly from a computer store, not from a physical machine. The key is attached to a label on the disk case. If it functions, what steps should I take to obtain another usable key? Should I contact tech support? The key has only been used in virtual environments or bootcamp setups on Macs.

It functions properly because it was a retail edition.

Don't feel obligated to input it correctly—just make sure you're typing it accurately. If that doesn't work, consider reaching out to them directly.

You should be fine with the new PC, despite the bootcamp warning saying "invalid."
