I've kept a digital version of my Windows for several years, starting in 2016. This morning I powered on my PC and everything seemed normal. But later that evening it reported that Windows wasn't activated. When I tried to activate it, the message said "cannot activate Windows now." It's really annoying. There aren't any error codes showing up. I'm using Windows 8.1 Pro. The closest error I've seen was 0x8007007b. I've used the slmgr -ipk command in Command Prompt, but it still shows a watermark and doesn't disappear. Under Systems it says Windows doesn't recognize it as activated. HALP!!

I experienced this before too. Have you attempted a system reboot to check? Otherwise, you might try using the phone activation method—just type "slui.exe 4" in a command prompt to access the activation screen.

It seems the message is unclear and possibly misleading. Let me know how I can help clarify this.

A suitable approach is to reach out to your system administrator for assistance.

Currently the watermark is missing, yet both PC configurations and the control panel still identify it as inactive.

Dreamspark covers our school fees for one activation window. We’ve lost touch since then, but we haven’t faced any issues.

Haha, that's strange. The Windows just turned on when I pressed the enter key without typing anything. Appreciate the help!

They likely have some issues where those shouldn't occur. Nice that it’s working, as I was planning to say: No, it seems like you’re using a volume key that needs direct contact with the original network. (This isn’t happening because it should remain valid indefinitely)
