Turn off folder previews in Windows settings.
Turn off folder previews in Windows settings.
I understand the frustration, but folder previews are a common feature many users enjoy. I used to like them too, but now I miss them and wish they were gone. Finding a way back seems tough. In File Explorer, going to Options > View doesn’t show the preview option—any alternative solutions?
Navigate to the View menu you previously opened and select "Always show icons, never thumbnails." You may want to click "Apply to folders" to set this for all similar folders. This adjustment might need repetition in various locations since Windows handles different file types (such as general, music, images) separately. For a different appearance, consider using layouts like "Small Tiles," "List," or "Details," which hide folder previews.
It seems there is a viable option. Using a tailored folder icon removes previews, and Windows provides the folder icon directly without thumbnails. Unfortunately, I couldn't locate a reliable method to alter the default icons for all folders. You can adjust it manually by accessing the folder properties, navigating to the customize section, and selecting the change icon option. The empty folder icons you see here block previews on my system, but restoring defaults will restore them.
Thanks for the feedback. The alternative approach you mentioned works well. You can turn off unwanted settings by editing the registry, and I created a batch script to handle that across all your machines. If you're not ready to dive into the registry, simply using the script is the simplest option—just keep in mind it may take longer if you have many folders.
