Turn off CPU cores on Phenom II X4 955 for increased clock speeds and improved performance.
Turn off CPU cores on Phenom II X4 955 for increased clock speeds and improved performance.
I'm checking if I can run my MC server on a 3D Rage II + DVD setup to sell my GTX 750. I'm searching the BIOS for settings to turn on PCI video devices. From what I found, under Chipset config → Internal Graphics, pick the chipset with PCI support. I also discovered the Core Disabler tool. The base Java MC app needs just 1-2 cores. My idea is to turn off cores 3 and 4, increase the clock speed slightly, and see if performance improves. This seems reasonable. Also, the tooltip says you can disable cores you don't want, except for the first one.
Could have achieved this on my FX-6300 for a single-core bound game back then. Your chip differs, so results might vary. Give it a shot, luck you with it. Managed to raise from 4GHz to 4.5GHz by turning off some cores and cutting heat, but a better boost could come from upgrading your cooler. Since you're still using the Phenom CPU, it seems most upgrades aren't available for you.
