I adjusted my setup to avoid strain on my arms and wrist by removing the arm rest and preventing my hand from touching the mouse pad. This change seems to be easing concerns about carpal tunnel, and I feel better overall. However, my performance in Planetside 2 has dropped because the pivot mechanism no longer supports my wrist properly. I’m now focusing on different tasks like building bases, using vehicle guns, laying mines, and stationary sniping. Should I abandon infantry combat altogether? I’m unsure how to restore my skills without risking further injury.

I was playing with an orbweaver a few weeks ago. It was a gift from my girlfriend. You just need some time to adjust to the new gear. The same applies to the updated setup. Take your time practicing with it. It might take a few weeks, but you'll regain your previous abilities.

Unless your hand is in an unusual spot and you don’t play for half a day, you shouldn’t be overly concerned about carpal tunnel. My job requires at least 8 hours of sitting at the computer, and after work I head home where I spend another 5-6 hours in front of it. So far everything is fine—just occasional numbness in my hand, probably because my desk isn’t big enough for a comfortable position. Try using your wrist more often.

Well I live in a rural area and unless I've got work to do I'm on my PC making friends in games or on forums like this.

That's a question about age, but carpal tunnel typically develops later in life.
