i just installed an msi b650 tomahawk wifi board for my 7950x3d. first, i formatted the usb to fat32 and set it as mbr. next, i updated the latest bios version onto the drive and renamed it to msi.rom. then i connected the 4-pin cpu power and 24-pin mobo power to the psu and powered it up. i connected the psu to the usb drive at the bios flash port and pressed the flash button for about three seconds. after that, the white bios led stayed on for 5 to 7 seconds before turning off, then it flashed slowly five times. the led didn’t come back on afterward. no other lights on the board lit up during this process. i’m not sure what’s happening since i don’t have any memory, ssd, or cpu installed on the mobo—it’s just sitting there. i’ve also replaced the 3v cmos battery. any advice would be really helpful! specs that might matter: mobo: msi mag b650 tomahawk, cpu: amd ryzen 7950x3d, psu: seasonic prime tx-1000, ram: g.skill trident z5 neo rgb 32gb (2x16gb), gpu: msi gaming x trio rtx 4080 16gb.

Instead of placing the CPU and RAM on the board, you can power it up directly. Adding a cooler will also help with performance. If you enter the BIOS, you can update it for better functionality.

I was hesitating a bit since I have a large liquid freezer, like a 360 AIO, and it might be tricky to test. But I think I can give it a shot.

Clear. Just install the pump and its header; you don’t have to connect all the fans. The water flow should be sufficient for testing.

I entered the BIOS system and noticed something odd. Many others mentioned that updating the BIOS was necessary to support X3D CPUs. I realized the flash I used didn’t work because the one I saw in BIOS was outdated compared to the version I attempted to install. It seems my boards came with fresh factory BIOS that already supports the CPU. That’s a relief! Thanks for your guidance!

Occasionally you win the lottery and receive a new BIOS, but verify you’re using the version that doesn’t negatively affect the 7950X3D by casting too many votes. There were earlier BIOS updates that didn’t properly support the 7950X3D (as noted by ASUS).

Sure, I'll make sure to use the latest version whenever possible. I didn't choose ASUS because of their treatment of that issue.

Gigibite, Asrock and similar models also faced issues with their bios. However, it wasn't the same triple failure Asus experienced—where overvolting was possible without shutting down and the bios contained misleading legal warnings that were later corrected.
