I received some neighbors discarding their PCs, and when I asked if I could get one, they said yes. I plan to use it as an old console emulation machine. The biggest issue is running Windows XP—I’m fine with it—but I don’t have restore disks or a copy of XP or XP 7. When the system boots into Windows 98%, many programs fail to start, sometimes Task Manager even launches, and sometimes Yahoo Messenger does too. The Windows Explorer.exe won’t launch, the Start menu doesn’t appear, and the mouse stops working. I see CPU load at 100% despite having 512MB of RAM (it should be up to 2GB), and it claims it’s using 1.04GB of RAM when it should be less. I tried booting into System Restore before the OS by pressing F11, but that just prompted me to insert a CD again. I pressed F8 and used the command prompt with system restore points, but only the first restore worked. I’ve considered everything possible. Do you have any suggestions I might have missed?

Run Malwarebytes first, then add Avast and perform a full scan with maximum sensitivity. If that fails, use ComboFix and Hitman Pro for further cleaning. If the issue persists, switch to Linux and install Wine (some emulators support Linux versions) or download an XP ISO from the source...

They already have macafee installed, but the virus is blocking it. Could you try getting the other one to set it up?

I work as a freelance tech helper in a computer repair shop. When you need a backup, look for a Kaspersky Rescue Disk to create a bootable drive using a spare blank DVD or CD with enough space. The process may be slow, but it works reliably.

I’ve stopped trying to fix this virus. First I ran malware samples in safe mode and found over 600 threats. After that, I could boot normally without issues, but when I tried running the programs again, they either failed scans or didn’t start. Then I tried safe mode once more, but it would restart every time it got close to booting, and then it would repeat the same process. I’m now considering using a Windows 7 disk from my sister to try again.
