Try boosting performance on I5-4690k using ASUS Z97-P board
I am just starting out with overclocking and need guidance. I attempted to push my CPU to 4.5 Ghz using AI Suite 3, but it didn’t work. Could you help me understand how to reach 4.5 Ghz with a Z97-P motherboard? Also, I’m using the Nepton 240M cooler.
The selected motherboard isn't suitable for serious overclocking. It's a basic four-phase model, limiting expectations to moderate boosts—clocks beyond around 3.8-4Ghz consistently may not be reliable. For achieving a 4.5Ghz overclock, a more appropriate board would be necessary. If the board can support a full-time 4Ghz boost and maintains stable temperatures for at least 15 hours using Prime95 version 26.6 (exclusively that version), I'd consider it a satisfactory outcome. Using AI tools or other automatic utilities is generally not recommended, as they often increase voltage beyond safe limits.
This motherboard isn't suitable for serious overclocking. It's a basic four-phase model, so expect only moderate performance gains. Clocks above around 3.8 to 4Ghz consistently may not be reliable.
For a 4.5Ghz overclock, a more capable board is essential. If you manage to achieve full-time 4Ghz overclock on this platform, and both the CPU and motherboard VRM stay within acceptable limits—especially with stable performance during a 15-hour Prime95 run (version 26.6 only)—then it could work.
Automatic tools and AI utilities are not ideal for overclocking. They often push voltage beyond necessary levels to prioritize stability, leading to higher thermal stress and difficulty in control.
Consider removing any utility-based OC settings and setting up your own BIOS configuration. There are many helpful tutorials available for the Z97 platform. This guide is specifically tailored for it:

This motherboard isn't suitable for serious overclocking. It's just a four-phase power model. I wouldn't expect much more than moderate overclock potential, so clocks above around 3.8 to 4Ghz all the time are probably not stable.
If you're aiming for a 4.5Ghz boost, you'll need a better board. But if you can achieve full-time 4Ghz overclock on that unit—with both CPU and motherboard VRM temps within limits—and the CPU stays steady for at least 15 hours of Prime95 version 26.6 (just this version)—I'd be satisfied with the outcome.
Also, relying on AI tools or other automatic utilities for overclocking isn't ideal. Those settings often push voltage higher than necessary to prioritize stability, which raises thermal stress and makes control harder.
I recommend disabling any utility-based OC settings and setting your own OC parameters directly in the BIOS. There are many helpful guides available for BIOS overclocking on the Z97 platform. This looks like a solid resource:

Thanks for the advice. I'll attempt the overclock in BIOS, or if not, I'll opt for a better board.
