I exchanged with a friend about a broken Xbox One S. It powers on briefly before shutting off completely, without any display or fan operation. The disc reader functions but there are no signs of liquid damage or burnt traces. His father reportedly threw it on the floor and it was repaired successfully afterward. Could something be causing the intermittent failure?

It might be the hard drive. It’s straightforward to take it out, connect it to a PC, and perform a health check.

I resolved the issue by cleaning the mobo with 70% isopropyl alcohol and a toothbrush.

His dad placed the Xbox on the floor? It could be because of damaged PCB traces, especially given the multiple layers in those boards. That said, let's begin at the top: if inserting a disc works, does it actually spin? You might want to try booting the Xbox with the disc in the drive. Have you inspected the fan for continuity? EDIT: You mentioned you fixed it while I was typing. Great work! Edited August 2, 2022 by MLConian

I’m planning to bring the Xbox to a repair shop and check their pricing. I’m also considering moving it in the oven or swapping it with a friend.
