Troubleshoot GTA V performance issues on PC.
Model: 1060-6gb with 2600x16gb RAM, clocked at 3000MHz. Includes both SSD and HDD. My game performed well until about two days ago. I attempted standard restarts and PC reboots, but performance dropped below 1fps. After a restart, it briefly stabilized at medium-high settings (60-80 fps). I moved the drive from SSD to HDD, ran a scan for installation and verified files multiple times. Windows Drive Repair also helped without success. The issue persists with GTA PC—sometimes it runs smoothly when I press Alt-Tab, but then becomes unstable afterward. It’s unclear what’s causing the problem. If anyone can assist, it would be really appreciated since I’m just getting back into the game.
It seems like a major performance issue. Previously, I could maintain around 74fps on high settings in GTA Online, but now I’m struggling to hit over 60fps in the city. My graphics card has a 1080 and 4790k resolution, but the i7 only utilizes about 60% of its capacity, and the GPU might be getting overloaded at 5-10%. The game is running much slower now, especially after the latest update.
The initial image shows the windowed setting. It’s not unusual at all. The subsequent picture appears in fullscreen right away after pressing Alt + Tab within the game. What caught my attention was that when I switched to windowed mode initially, the game functioned properly until I began using Alt + Tab to launch the task manager, etc. I attempted to revert to fullscreen and then back to windowed, but it was already too late—it returned to unstable performance. I believe this issue is linked to the act of switching between modes, especially when using Alt + Tab. Sometimes the game launches poorly without any mode switch at all (even during launch or while loading GTA Online). I recently started playing Fortnite for the first time since I couldn’t play GTA, and I observed that my ping would frequently spike to 300-500 with packet loss, causing the same low frame rate issues as in GTA. This led me to question whether my internet connection was the culprit, though it has remained stable for other devices and services. My internet seems normal—only occasional fluctuations between 40-60 and 30-40 with stable ping. I ran multiple speed tests and tried other games like CS:GO, but ping remained consistent. My conclusion is that either my internet connection has suddenly deteriorated (though it’s been reliable before), or the problem is related to the game itself, possibly due to network instability affecting performance. I’m unsure if this mirrors the issues I experienced in GTA, where ping spikes and packet loss coincided with FPS drops. I’ve checked internet statistics in GTA, but they’re absent. Right now, I’m left with no clear solution and am considering a factory reset of my PC, which was performed about six to eight months ago. If this can be avoided, that would be ideal. Otherwise, I’m at a loss and appreciate your assistance.
Sure, you can capture the performance tab in Task Manager and take a screenshot of the CPU usage graph. Make sure to right-click and choose an option like "show logic cores." Regarding the GTA Online servers, you're right to consider singleplayer first—low FPS can often point to server issues or your connection. Running the game at 800x600 resolution without changing graphics settings can help you measure FPS more accurately. This should give you clearer insight into whether the problem lies with the game or your setup.
I don't believe it's a CPU issue since everything else works smoothly, even before this problem. I would have thought it was related to the internet, but it only affects the game when switching to windowed mode after pressing Alt+Tab. It seems like there might be something more unusual going on that's hard to understand.
I previously mentioned testing the game in single-player mode. If it functions smoothly, the issue seems to stem from a network problem. Should it remain slow, consider reducing the resolution to 800x600 without adjusting graphics settings and check the improvement. If that doesn<|pad|>, the problem is likely related to CPU or Windows settings, possibly involving power plans.
I've tested single player too. The same problem keeps happening. I'm on vacation right now but will adjust the resolution upon my return. Thanks again for your assistance.
