Trapped by the motherboard's initial display, spent many hours attempting a solution
I recently assembled a PC using refurbished components. It features a GTX 970 EVGA, an i7 3930k processor, and a gigabyte GA-X79-UD5 motherboard. I frequently encounter problems with the boot screen, being unable to access BIOS or install Windows via USB. Once powered off, I’m left with a persistent white cursor in the top-left corner. I’ve attempted various fixes—resetting CMOS, removing the motherboard power, testing the dual BIOS, checking all PCI-E slots for the GPU—but nothing resolves the issue. Even trying an RX 580 resulted in no video display and non-functional keyboard lights. The only actionable command I can perform is pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del, which restarts the system but doesn’t alter its state. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
No, it's not possible to enter the BIOS without the SSD or HDD installed.
Do you know if your motherboard has fault lights or codes? Most boards come with them, so consult your manual for guidance. From what I've seen, it's usually the RAM that causes issues. You could try swapping out the RAM, testing in a different slot, or using just one stick to see if it resolves the problem.
Reset the CMOS power button to off by turning it off and holding the power button or pressing it several times until you feel resistance. If it doesn’t work, unplug the CMOS battery—it will look like a round coin on the board. That should clear all settings in the BIOS; wait a few minutes, then put the battery back and check the results.
