You're considering swapping your current i5 6400 for a higher-end CPU and RAM without altering the motherboard. It's worth exploring, but assess your needs first—if you plan heavy gaming or multitasking, upgrading could be beneficial. Check compatibility with your current setup and see if the performance boost justifies the cost.

Your motherboard model influences what you can use. If your socket is FCLGA 1151, it should work with any new CPU, though the chipset updates every other generation. You may need to upgrade the board if it's outdated or stick with a CPU that matches the current chipset.

Consider upgrading to a B450 board with a Ryzen 1600AF for better performance.

The motherboard is an Asus H110M-K using LGA1151. Do you believe I can make any changes to it?

Yes, it works well. However, another choice could be a B450+ 3600 combo: i7-7700 at $373, plus Ryzen 5 3600 at $105 (MSI Gaming Plus MAX), totaling $278. The decision depends on your needs.

It focuses on CPU replacement expenses and the highest achievable performance. Recently, purchasing a full Ryzen motherboard, memory, and a 6/12 CPU package is more affordable than buying a high-end used CPU, even though the CPU itself remains limited to 4/8. If the socket supported more, there could be a debate. But in reality, it’s not a valid point. The top performance you get from that motherboard matches that of a basic Ryzen APU.

Changing from Intel to AMD can affect compatibility, so pay attention to motherboard specifications. Simply plugging in components isn’t enough—verify they match the new board’s requirements.
