Transitioning to 7700k
Transitioning to 7700k
I've got a 7700k running at 4.9 GHz, considering a Ryzen 7 5800X upgrade. You also have a 1080ti and 32GB RAM at 3200 MHz. Would you consider it a good move? Since you're unlikely to get a GPU soon, it might be worth focusing on the CPU upgrade.
If it's available at the manufacturer's suggested price, that's fine. Otherwise, I wouldn't bother. It might also make sense to hold off until AM5. AM4 is basically a non-functional port.
I’d rather skip mentioning USD comparisons if it doesn’t reflect your actual cost—they don’t matter. What I said remains valid.
Do you need to improve your setup? ... Are there tasks your PC can't handle without a faster CPU? ... If the processor is restricting performance and the cost is near the MSRP, then yes it could make sense... if you're patient, I'd suggest waiting. Don't rush it and save up that money instead.
It's not a good moment to upgrade right now; new chips are coming soon, prices are rising sharply, demand is high, and so on. Unless your existing setup is significantly limiting you, it might be best to hold off. The 7700K and 1080ti remain solid choices.
Uncertain about this, but it really hinges on your budget. A 5800X struggles with cooling, which is its biggest issue. Many opt for under-volting, but if your system has enough cooling capacity, that shouldn’t be a concern. Heavy water cooling will likely be necessary. I usually suggest custom loops and full copper waterblocks for top-tier builds. Still, budget matters a lot. Did you miss any discussions? If your board supports an 8700K or 8086K, those are solid choices. You could use a lid like the 8700/8086K, but since you’re experienced, it shouldn’t be a problem. Consider selling the 7700K to offset chip costs. Apart from that, a 7700K at 4.9GHz performs well in games—depends on the title and background tasks. Eight threads should approach full usage in certain cases.
