I've been using Windows 8.1 for roughly a year before it crashed, then I reinstalled it and it failed again, and so on across multiple drives on two different systems. My Windows 7 from 2009 has always worked fine. Go ahead. (Recommend the mod from Ninite Windows 8 mod—it just makes it look like Windows 7)
