I collected four Windows keys. Two came at $15 each during discounts for upgrading from older systems to Windows 8, taking advantage of a system loophole. The remaining two were leftover licenses from my old laptops. I currently have one Windows 8 license and three left. Can I convert them to Windows 10 without reinstalling or updating each license? Would using VMware and updating the licenses have worked for me?

If you gave them a gift, it would depend on the installer's decision to upgrade (free if released within one year).

They need to be turned on in various platforms (as far as I understand), with the exception of the Windows 10 upgrade on each one.

I don’t have four systems available, that’s disappointing—I think they should be functional because they’re valid keys.

Consider trying to turn on the keys on your present computer, such as entering them, then approving the upgrade and reverting the changes. It’s uncertain if this will succeed, but you might give it a shot.

Virtual machines are available. Microsoft treats each VM as a distinct system, noting you must obtain a separate license for each one running Windows OS. Win7 EULA: refer to page 2, point 3d [link]. Win8 EULA: see page 3, point 1e [link].
