I set up a new topic since the original one no longer fits your needs. I currently reside on campus at a university, which uses 802.1x authentication for its devices. Some of my gadgets don’t support this method, but I’d like to create a private network where my computer acts as a router. Since my PC is already online, I plan to use my Wi-Fi card to connect other devices via the internet and also through Ethernet if available. Is this feasible? Where should I begin?

I perform this task. What platform are you using? You can easily create a native solution in software; I'm setting up the virtual switch on the Linux kernel via KVM, and it functions properly.

You're on Windows 10, and you're concerned about keeping a virtual machine running in the background.

On Windows there's an easy way to share a Wi-Fi connection to your Ethernet port. From there you could connect a router and link as many wired/wireless clients as you want to the router. The speeds will be terrible but it'll work. It'll also be a bit vulnerable to attack but what isn't these days.

It’s not necessary. You can install a complete router OS inside VMware and configure the VM with minimal resources—like 512MB and one core—and it should function properly.
