I need to move my Windows 10 system from an SSD to a HDD so I can later install Linux on the SSD. I have one SSD with only Windows 10, one empty HDD for migration, and another HDD with all my data. Previously, I used free tools like Acronis, EaseUS, and AOMEI, but none support OS migration in their free versions. Now they require payment. I’ve tested many options and haven’t found a reliable, free method. I’m really looking for a secure and cost-free solution. Please help me out!

Clone the disk using software such as Clonezilla. Avoid installing any operating system on an HDD.

I suggest checking out DiskGenius. Its free version allows OS migration and offers numerous useful features. You'll find a helpful video highlighting various applications, including DiskGenius. Make sure your target hard drive uses a GPT partition layout instead of an MBR setup.

Windows is significantly heavier than Linux and starts very slowly on a hard drive, so it's best to install Linux on the HDD.

I understand Windows runs slower on HDD while Linux is more lightweight. Since I’ll be using Linux exclusively and only need Windows as a backup, this is my secondary machine. It hasn’t been used in years, so I’m planning to turn it into a home server—possibly with Plex and BlueIris later.

I only noted that the latest Windows versions need it to run on a GPT. DiskGenius also works with MBR, except during OS migration. It can transform a drive into GTP with a few easy steps.
