can you make it work by organizing and splitting the new drive, loading the picture while it's connected as an external, swapping the drives, starting from a rescue USB, and then transferring the image to the other side? I understand there are tools that can safely delete partitions beforehand.

it is not a 2.5" device and all the information available confirms "SATA based M.2"

Could you please let me know if it's actually an M.2 drive? Also, the number hidden by the reflection reads "D P/N 02P56M."

It's a SATA III drive with an M.2 format. Since your laptop only has one M.2 port, the options for cloning are restricted.
