I've been searching for quality DDR2 RAM for a budget server. I'm particularly interested in OCZ memory for the heat spreader, but I haven't found suitable options yet. Could I possibly use other types of memory instead?

Are you referring to the Reapers? It seems the heat spreaders are secured mainly with screws, which likely makes them easy to handle. You might need to replace the thermal pads. Sometimes removing heat spreaders can accidentally harm the RAM if they were stuck in place.

Refers to the OCZ gold or platinum versions. This piece is platinum, while the gold looks comparable.

They were simply secured using the thermal pads.

It's tough to remove the spreaders from the gold and platinum kits. This particular spreader is quite flexible. I also have a collection of DDR3 Golds that I've been wanting to take apart, including removing the spreaders.

Check if the unit is secured tightly. If it is, gently loosen the fastening points one by one while keeping the spreader in place to avoid harm.

I don't have any tricks I'm aware of. People usually adapt.
