Transferring BF4 to an SSD
Transferring BF4 to an SSD
So I decided to move BF4 from my 3TB HDD to my 128GB SSD that also contains my OS. I did it the easy and time consuming way by uninstalling and changing the install path then reinstalling because I don't care about waiting for it to download. Since I am an idiot, I didn't realize that I did not have enough space on my SSD for all of the MASSIVE DLC content as well. I just want to know if I can install my game and a couple DLCs on my SSD, and install the remaining DLCs on a different hard drive. I know it's a stretch, but hey, what do I have to lose? I'd rather ask before I even attempt though, as I have two more DLCs to download along with the one that has about 6GB to go, while I only have 6.9GB free on my SSD. And yes, I have deleted some stuff from the SSD to make room, but apparently not enough. If someone wants to buy me another SSD just for games, that's be great, but otherwise, don't tell me to buy another one, because I'm broke lol Thanks, Chaz
According to my observations, BF4 is currently around 45GB with the DLCs installed. Downloading this could help visualize which files consume space in the GUI and let you remove unnecessary items. You might also want to delete the hibernation file—its size can reach about 10GB if you don’t use it. Check if your SSD has a system page file by default (~8GB), and consider moving it to your HDD. Managing these factors could free up enough space for the remaining DLCs.
I tested both approaches and successfully freed some additional space using the program. However, I’m still uncertain whether the command prompt made a difference. I had sufficient room to complete Second Assault and Dragon's Teeth, but China Rising and Naval Strike remain pending. There are about 9.5GB left, with 6.72GB free on my SSD. I’m confident I’ll locate more files to delete for the remaining downloads. Appreciate your assistance.
I recorded three actions. The command prompt to disable hibernate and conserve space was executed: powercfg.exe /hibernate off. Navigate to Control Panel, then All Control Panel Items, Performance Information and Tools. Open Adjust Visual Effects, proceed to the advanced tab, click Change under Virtual Memory, select your SSD drive letter and choose No Paging File, then click Set. Next, for the HDD, pick a letter, opt for custom size or system managed, and click Set again. Finally, press OK. The third step involved searching for additional items to remove in that program to ensure everything was tried. Also, administrative rights might be necessary for hibernate to function properly.
I apologize for the confusion. It seems I can't locate the Performance Information and Tools in the control panel. I see you have All Control Panel Items displayed, which is helpful. You mentioned using Windows 8.1, that might affect the display. Regarding the hibernate feature, I have administrative rights, but I'll include a screenshot of the command prompt action for reference.
After the latest BF4 update yesterday, using an SSD became impractical. On my 120GB SSD, I usually load in about 10 seconds, which works fine. The game only begins when all eight players on each side are ready and loaded, followed by a brief 5-second pause for spawn selection. I’ve moved BF4 to my hard drive as well—unless you prefer loading during the middle of a match in just 10 seconds.
