I’m just starting out with DIY PC builds. My sisters’ laptop is nearing the end of its life, and my family wants to replace it. We’re trying to convince my parents to skip buying a ready-made unit and instead build a custom ATX tower myself. The components are mostly decided, but there’s a problem with Windows 10 licensing. We’re not investing a lot on the new machine, and license fees can be expensive. I’m hoping we can transfer the license. On her laptop, the settings show it’s activated with a digital license tied to a Microsoft account. I expected that would make migration possible, though recent research suggests OEM licenses usually can’t be moved. According to Windows support, the license might still be transferable. Someone here might know if this has happened before and could offer guidance. Also, I know Windows can run unactivated, but my parents aren’t interested in that option.

Based on my observations, OEM licenses generally cannot be transferred. To test this, log in to the Microsoft Account website using the PC that has the key registered. Navigate to Devices, locate your device, and if a transfer is available, click the "Deregister Device" button. This will remove the device from your Windows account, allowing you to sign in on a new device where it should activate automatically via digital entitlement. Additionally, you can obtain a Windows 10 Pro license for approximately £5/$5 from various sources currently.

I would avoid supporting piracy at all costs, as any involvement could result in a warning or more serious consequences.

Thank you, I'll attempt that when the opportunity arises. That's the goal I'm aiming for.

If the watermark bothers you, there are methods to eliminate it. Sync options on your Microsoft account won’t work if you plan to use one. In the worst situation, you might have to buy an original key.
