I own a 3rd gen i5 desktop. I planned to upgrade to a 12th gen i5 with an NVMe system. The OS is Win 7 32-bit, and there are many applications making the setup difficult. I cloned the hard drive to NVMe, but when trying to boot via Command Prompt, it wouldn’t start directly. I realized some CMD commands could help, though the NVMe driver was missing, causing a reboot instead of booting. In recovery mode, USB devices are missing except for the PS2 keyboard, which is fine. Using DiskPart, no disks were found. I tried reverting back to the old PC to search for drivers. I discovered some 64-bit NVM updates but needed 32-bit versions. After searching again, I found a 32-bit update that worked—though it caused errors like “missing mount” and then rolled back. I upgraded to Windows 8 but lost files and photos. Anyone have tips for fixing this on Win7? Maybe some 32-bit drivers or special software to install them?

Clone the device again and then start in safe mode. On Windows 10, after cloning from SATA to NVMe, booting into safe mode will fix the disk drivers automatically. I’m not sure about Windows 7. For Windows 8, it seems your apps should remain intact unless you use an x86 installer. Upgrading to a 2019 or newer version of Windows 10 might be necessary before proceeding.

Your system doesn’t boot into Win7 Safe Mode only. You’re attempting to start with early Windows 10 using the OG Win 10 drivers. For Windows 8, you’ve used Windows 8.1 x86 and upgraded via OS changes, not BIOS.

Launch a VM using disk 2 VHD and name it "Good". Then start the virtual machine (VirtualBox or similar) with the software you require. Use a 12th gen desktop setup to run normally on a modern OS independently. The hardware won't support this configuration. New drivers will never function on Windows 7—they can't comprehend them. This is essentially a miracle recovery; it's been five years since EOL. It's time to migrate or properly virtualize it. Eventually, performance will degrade permanently due to hardware limitations. At the very least, create a VM and keep a backup for when Windows 7 fails or gets compromised online.

The w7 version didn't include an NVMe driver, but there was a method to add them during installation, and I managed to get it to function properly.
