Uncertain why the speed can jump to 3-500 Megabytes per second at times, but often stays limited to 10 Megabytes per second. When in a rush and using an Ethernet cable to link two laptops for data transfer, the speed feels sluggish. I need tips to boost the connection consistently. Also, since the files being sent are large, it’s not due to many small chunks.

Are these notebooks equipped with Gigabit Ethernet ports? Which kind of cable are they connected to—Cat 5, 5e, 6, or another standard?

Both laptops require 1 gbps network cards. Gigabit cards automatically recognize each other so you can connect with a standard Ethernet cable. If one has a 100mbps card, switch to a crossover cable or rearrange the wires in a crossover setup—it will work. Gigabit offers speeds up to 125 MB/s.
