I have Windows installed on an old HDD along with several other applications. I need to transfer Windows to an SSD while leaving the programs on the HDD intact, so I can move Windows to the SSD and retain everything on the HDD.

Program files remain fixed after setup. Suitable only for games or portable versions. Avoid cloning or moving Windows; perform a fresh installation.

You need to back up your important files before making any changes on Windows 10 Pro. This way, you won’t lose anything valuable.

Start by removing the password from your account on the hard drive. Disconnect the HDD, then install Windows on the SSD. After that, reconnect the HDD and your files should become available again. Install the necessary programs on the SSD.

You can remove Windows from your HDD by following the uninstall steps, then use the same process for the two SSDs. Make sure to back up any important data before proceeding.

Ensure your SSD is connected to the PC and install Windows. After completion, power off the system and connect the HDD. Transfer files from the HDD to the SSD before reinstalling applications, and create backups of program lists for a smooth restart.

Consider your needs before choosing a method. Acronis offers convenient migration, but a clean install ensures a fresh start without lingering data issues. Transferring everything might save time but could risk inconsistencies. Decide based on how critical your data is and what you want to achieve.

I completely understand your point (no one seems to grasp what they're discussing). The task was straightforward – transfer windows from HDD to SSD while keeping programs on the old HDD, without reinstalling them. Even though it sounds like a bad idea (SSD with programs still on HDD), the goal was simple. There are several approaches, but none are easy. Once the system is cloned or installed on SSD, those software files that were originally on HDD should still function. Most will work regardless of installation status. Some may need registry changes (if cloning), others registry copies (if fresh install), or a full reinstall. None of these methods seem suitable here – it really requires someone with advanced skills to handle it properly, and I don’t think sideqcktv is that expert level. For someone not familiar with this, the only option is to clone the system with all programs and ignore the risky idea of leaving them on HDD. Of course, there are also concerns about free SSD space, HDD space, and whether sideqcktv has an extra external drive for backups. A lot of questions and possible solutions.

That’s not a good approach. Simply transferring Windows files from one drive to another isn’t reliable, especially if the drives differ in size. You need to create a clone and use specific tools to move everything accurately. Even then, differences in storage capacity can cause issues.
