The easiest method is to use the built-in Windows tool to transfer your data. This keeps everything intact and avoids changing settings or files after installation. For moving to a larger disk, ensure the new drive is properly formatted and that the primary partition is expanded before transferring. The recovery partition should be placed after the primary so it doesn’t interfere with the main setup.
Use a tool such as Macrium Reflect to duplicate the entire drive to a new HDD or SSD. You'll find settings to keep partitions in their original sizes or adjust them for expansion or reduction. When extending storage, the software won't alter reserved or recovery partition dimensions.
For Samsung or Crucial SSDs/NVMe, there are complimentary utilities available. I recently installed a 1TB Samsung Pro on my workstation using their free software. The process usually took around 15 minutes with no problems during transfer or booting. The toughest part was securing the drive and reattaching the heat sink since the module was inside the computer, making it tricky to fit the screws.
I tried Seagate DiscWizard and it performed well with the new disk. The process ran smoother than expected, and it automatically allocated the extra space into the primary partition before the recovery partition during cloning. Now I’m wondering about switching Disk 0 and Disk 4. One idea is to disconnect all disks and keep only the new one in, then restart repeatedly while plugging in the others. This should help them follow the desired order based on their drive letters in Windows.
It didn't function properly. With just the new disk attached, it showed up as Disk 0, but once I restarted using another disk, it switched back to Disk 0 and the new drive moved to Disk 1. This behavior might be related to the system listing SATA before PCIe. All previous drives used SATA, while the new one uses PCIe. The SATA drives are arranged in the sequence I prefer based on the numbered SATA ports on the motherboard.
It looks like PCIe and NVMe are often shown after SATA, which makes it seem confusing. That's just how the listings are organized.
