Hi guys. Gonna go straight to the scenario. Built a new rig yesterday (Specs in the sig). Tried to install my Windows 10 (which I got from the 2015 Windows 7 to Windows 10 Free Upgrade). Windows not activating anymore. RECAP on how many devices I've used this license. (I DONT HAVE ANY WINDOWS 10 PRODUCT KEY SINCE IT WAS FREE FROM MS). 1. 2015 from Windows 7 to Windows 10 Update. i5 2500k P67 Motherboard. WORKED. 2. 2016. Installed on a new rig. i5 4690k Z97 Motherboard. WORKED. 3. 2016. Installed on a new rig. i5 6500 B150M Motherboard. WORKED. 4. 2018. Installed on a new rig. Ryzen 7 2700X B450 Motherboard. NOT WORKING. Any work around on this? Thanks.
To the best of my understanding, I also upgraded to Windows 10 for free. I made several hardware upgrades without any issues, but once I switched to my Ryzen configuration, activation stopped working. The keys are tied to the motherboard. Eventually, I had to purchase a new license for $50 from a friend who runs a PC shop. I gave up on trying to activate it, but maybe someone else has a better chance.
Choose an online account instead of offline for login, then contact MS and describe the issue—they’ll resolve it over the phone. If you’re someone who disables all Windows features, still reach out to MS; they may not take your explanation seriously and might suggest purchasing a new Windows 10 license. MS support is generally supportive—just provide details of what occurred and follow their guidance. For licensing concerns, only the original vendor can assist. Note that if your original Windows 7 license was an OEM license instead of a retail one, you’ll need to obtain a new license for your new machine, as this is the standard policy with OEM deals.
If it's retail, file a complaint with MS. A valid retail license allows use on any device without restrictions. OEMs may be denied activation on new hardware or after certain conditions, and agreeing to those terms is required. You can test with an OEM to create a problematic situation—your choice. E: Alternatively, if the license ties to your MS account, just log in. Using the connection key removes the restrictions.
