Hi, i have an ssd with an install of windows 7 on it and i did something stupid to it and all i get now is a black screen with the cursor. i am going to grab my files off the system but i want to get a picture of the desktop layout that i have on that install. is there someway that i might be able to do this? can i copy the profile folder to another install of windows and login under the same information (i use a Active Directory Domain for logging into my computers) and have the desktop the way as it was on the install that i messed up?

Question your confidence. Isn't it possible to revert the system?

I turn off system restore since I rarely need it. I wish I had backed up the SSD before proceeding. Can I still copy my desktop layout using a program? I’ve made a workaround to access CMD from the black screen and can run it under my account. Would that allow me to capture a desktop layout?

Have you updated your profiles? Can you access your previous desktop setup in safe mode? Did you overlook executing the "Windows 7 Loader + Activator" tool? If your goal is to preserve everything on your desktop, locate it at C:\Users\###PROFILE NAME HERE###\Desktop. There you’ll see all your saved items. However, the arrangement is missing. All the order of your shortcuts and settings have vanished unless you retrieve them directly from your desktop.

Safe mode performs the same action. A black screen appears with no cursor. I’m going to retrieve my files, but the loss of my desktop layout is unsettling. I hope I never had to boot the drive on my laptop.

If the layout is no longer available, restoring it seems impossible. You might save your current order using 2-3 methods: take a screenshot, copy icons from the desktop folder, and manage them with tools like DisplayFusion.

I’ve already set up the SSD and moved my files over. I placed it in my main laptop to test it out—wow, it’s really quick. I have everything I need right now. Thanks for all your support!
