Last week I transferred a Windows 10 “.iso” file onto a USB stick while running Windows 8.1 because of hardware problems. Around 2 PM CST yesterday I began the process to prepare my SSD for installation. Either copying or verifying data seemed to cause the drive to stop working during the setup. I repeated the action multiple times and even ran “diskpart” to clean the SSD before retrying. Without any backup drives available, I couldn’t take the ISO to a repair shop because of COVID-19 restrictions, so I depended on my phone for assistance. I attempted to re-download the ISO from the official site but the webpage wouldn’t load in any browser I tried. I explored other sources and none worked. I was using a Google Pixel 1 (not an XL model) and faced challenges with flashing the ISO, USB 2 formats failed to appear on the drive, showing a black screen with a DVD/CD prompt. EtchDroid’s version also displayed the Windows setup interface normally until I clicked “Install Now,” which then insisted on a DVD or CD. I tried extracting the ISO file and copying it directly to the drive, but that didn’t succeed. It’s unclear if the issue was related to partitioning or my method. Times are tough when help is hard to reach due to the pandemic. My phone isn’t rooted. Updated April 4, 2020 by LogicalDrm – removed pirated content link.

I'm sorry about the piracy links—I appreciate you taking them down. Thank you for your help with finding Ubuntu and checking EtchDroid compatibility. I wasn't expecting it to go smoothly; it kept asking for a DVD/CD. During an online chat with a Microsoft support agent, they mentioned needing the Media Creation Tool and that flashing the .iso file wouldn't work without another Windows PC. I did manage to install Ubuntu, but I might try those piracy options tomorrow (though I won’t share them). Thanks again, @LogicalDrm. This experience with EtchDroid really pushed me forward.

They're just trying to sell something. I've mainly used Rufus for installing ISOs on both Windows 7 and 10. MCT is better for beginners, though it can be a bit unstable and sometimes has server problems. Using the ISO from the official Microsoft site should work fine. If it fails, check the download or mounting steps. You can also try Etcher or follow the advice on the Ask Ubuntu forum.
