I've been enjoying the DSIII NG experience with a SL1 character. Just managed to beat Prince Lothric and I'm really excited about it! Only Nameless King and the final boss remain to be tackled. So far, the Dancer, Pontif, and Abyss Watchers have been the toughest challenges. I lost at least 40 to 50 times on the Dancer alone. It wasn't until about 10 hours in until I realized you could use the "sword master" NPC to cheat the Dancer, saving me 5 to 10 hours. That would have also improved my gear for Pontif and Abyss Watchers, but I guess it's rewarding to reach this point as planned. For anyone who enjoys this game but wants a challenge, I recommend trying a "challenge" run—like SL1 or my favorite: the "only use what you start with" approach. This lets you focus on weapons, armor, consumables, rings, spells (if using a spell tool), and unlimited soul levels. I often struggle with picking the right weapons and optimizing my character, but setting strict limits feels freeing. You skip hours gathering loot in tough areas because most items can't be used. It's refreshing and gives the game a new energy. I even had an invasion in Lothric Castle last night while farming knights—SL1 with a +10 weapon makes that unlikely. The opponent waited at the Dragon Armor fog gate and we had a solid 3-hit finisher! He landed the first hit, I took the next two, he ended me off and handed me a bow... great! Anyone else who's tried SL1 or similar challenge/speed runs in DSIII? Also, my friends aren't into this game, so I don't have any group help. If anyone needs assistance with an area or boss, let me know—I might have a character in your SL summon range who can help! I'd love to explore more areas with someone when I move on to NG+ with this character.

I don't believe I'll be tackling a challenge run anytime soon. I managed to overcome the Nameless King in SL80.

What a cool fight that is...epic cut scenes for a Souls game! Was this your first playthrough of one of these games, and if so, did you enjoy it? What kind of character did you end up making?

It was my initial SoulsBorne title. It offered a unique experience compared to the showy fighters I'm familiar with. The game also boasts strong artistic quality. I finished with a mix of INT and DEX strategies.

Glad you had fun! Everyone gets to approach the game differently and I appreciate the idea that there is no "wrong" way to play. I wanted to buy some spells, but I never found Orbeck on my first playthrough I ended up using the great club and hurling it around pretty much the whole time...it looks awesome buffed with fire I'm sure they would seem dated to you but if you like the combat and style of gameplay of DSIII, DSI and even II are really great...cheap too! DSI runs awesome with DSfix, but the port is awful @720p native render and 30fps with drops. If you appreciated some of the art style of III, playing DSI will definitely give you some of those same memorable moments. DSII not so much in that regard but the game play is still satisfying IMO, albeit noticeably different compared to DeS/DSI/DSIII

I discovered Orbeck after defeating Lothric. I strongly dislike the Road of Sacrifices/Farron Keep section. I actually own the first Dark Souls game, but I quit quite soon and just watched the remaining parts on YouTube.
