Top Z790 board for stable DDR5 XMP RAM with G.Skil Trident Z5 6400MHz on 13900K
My ROG Strix Z790-F isn't behaving well at high XMP settings with the G.Skill Trident Z5 7200 34-45-45-115 or even the 6400 32-39-39-102 timings. It seems like the board might be faulty, causing random crashes and freezes during tests. The OCCT Large Data Set variable test works perfectly when using SPD 4800MHz RAM, but not at all with these configurations. I suspect the issue lies with the IMC in the 13900K chip, which apparently struggles with these speeds—my previous attempt with Gear 4 at 7200MHz already triggered a BSOD before Windows started, making stability even worse. Based on research, it appears that higher IMC chips can handle 6400MHz or slightly faster without major problems, especially in Gear 2. I’m leaning toward a more stable setup with 6400MHz instead of 7200MHz and will return the old board to look for a better one. I’d prefer at least 6400 Trident Z5 32-39-39-102 to run reliably out of the box. While dual DIMMs are ideal, they’re rare and tricky to fit, especially on boards with tight slot spacing. I need clearer guidance on memory compatibility and board options.
I’m also curious about how Asus Z690 and Z790 ROG Maximus Hero boards perform at XMP profiles compared to the ROG Strix E, F, Tuf, and Prime lines. The Hero series seems to be a strong upgrade over the Strix models, though Extreme is still not as reliable. How does the Hero stack up against the Strix line overall?
Lastly, how do Asus ROG Maximus Hero boards compare with MSI Carbon WiFi in the Z690 and Z790 series when it comes to DDR5 XMP stability?
