Top VPN compatible modem/router available on the market.
Hello, I'm planning to enhance my network with a new modem/router. It needs VPN support and Gigabit speed. I had a poor experience with the Netgear D7000v2 because their firmware is often unstable and each update introduces new issues. Recently, they sent me a version that completely disabled Wi-Fi connections to enable VPN functionality. The OpenVPN client also removed MD5 support, and Netgear hasn't upgraded encryption methods for VPNs. I require features like VPN Dynamic DNS and Gigabit Ethernet. It seems Netgear includes dynamic DNS with the device purchase—anyone else aware of this? Looking forward to your suggestions, have a great day!
I don't usually use routers, but Edgerouter 4? What do you think?
Purchase a PFSense device from the link provided. Create your own router rather than relying on the manufacturer. Options include routers with custom firmware like DDWRT or Tomato, but consider cost and performance. If you invest over $100 in a router, a PFSense is more sensible. I find it confusing why people keep buying pricier routers that do similar functions as older models—we already have the technology, and it’s free.
They seek a fresh WiFi protocol. G is obsolete. PFsense struggles with Wi-Fi. B) They prioritize simplicity. My view is DDWRT isn't that straightforward. C) Understanding is limited; most lack deep networking skills, opting for the simplest path. D) Not everyone has outdated gear or desires higher power consumption. E) Building a router, acquiring a switch (which PFsense performs poorly), then adding a wireless access point isn't ideal. F) Not all require the capabilities of a PFsense device. I've seen PFsense surpassing Cisco options—but not everyone values that level of performance, even if it's affordable. They prefer a device they can manage effortlessly for years.
Isn’t choosing a mini PC a risky move? I might be mistaken, but I believed you’d need a couple of Ethernet ports for a router (one for LAN, one for WAN). A single port for a mini PC would limit your options and make expansion difficult later. Plus, adding warranty or support contracts to the mix could complicate things.
This requirement remains challenging even with user-friendly routers. Regardless, understanding setup is essential for configuring VPNs on routers (if available). It's not about basic convenience; it involves specific tasks like changing keys or server addresses frequently. Setting up a VPN isn't straightforward, especially if you're dealing with custom firmware or mixing router and access point functions. Wifi integration can be simpler and more cost-effective with a solid router. If you have a viable solution for your issue, please share it. There doesn’t seem to be an easy workaround that works without further learning.
Apologies for the delayed response; thank you all for your replies. I’m unable to set up my own router, so I need a recommendation for a pre-built model that fits my needs. I can work with DDWRT but I’m unsure which modem/router would be best for installation and how stable it will be. Thanks again!
Edit: My choices are limited now—anyone have experience with these models? Linksys EA9500, Asus RT-AC86U, Synology RT-2600AC, Asus RT-AC5300 (believed to be older with less coverage), Asus RT-AC88U (good link aggregation but not a key feature and outdated). Are there other options similar to these?
