The priciest consumer motherboard available today remains a challenge, but some high-end options like the ASUS ROG Strix Z690 Pro or the MSI MEG 96 offer exceptional performance and value for serious builds.

For AM4 the crosshair VIII. If you're after top performance and water cooling, go for it. For LGA 1200, the Asus ROG MAXIMUS XII EXTREME works well. At that price range, consider a 5950X and a solid B550 board instead.

On PCPP you see the Maximus VIII Formula, but the linked info suggests otherwise since they’re offering a set of five Z170 boards for $2200. The pricier consumer motherboard listed is likely the ROG TRX40 Zenith II Extreme Alpha.

Certainly, if you want to expand on the "certain scenarios" from your initial comment, then that's fine.

Sounds like most people avoid AVX-512 except for the 3990x. Unless it's funded by Intel, few rely on it without enterprise equipment.

I understand your concern about the single CPU option. It’s important to know what you need before making a purchase.
