I used to be a dedicated Avast customer but grew frustrated with their recent marketing efforts. Now I rely on Windows Defender Security Essentials. Windows 8 should include it already, I believe.

Consider other free antivirus options rather than just shutting down the internet connection and powering off the device. Running Linux can be a safer alternative.

@ Rashy Malwarebytes isn't a complete shield against viruses, especially Spyware and Trojans. I recommend AVAST or MSE for better protection. Trust me and others—get the right antivirus!
