Looking for a solid wireless router that fully utilizes your 100 MB/s cable connection. You want features like daily usage caps per device or group, smart filtering of internet traffic, and the flexibility to set up custom configurations with Linux, FreeBSD, or popular tools such as e2Guardian or Squidguard. If you're open to building one, a budget-friendly hardware list could work well. Any recommendations or reasons for specific models would be appreciated. The current Sagecom F@st 5260 from Charter isn’t meeting your expectations.

Since no one else has chimed in, I'd like to thank you, King of the Dirty Dans, for your suggestion. I've heard Asus routers are good and full-featured. They're generally not mentioned when it comes to parental control features, but I'll look into what features it has. I still haven't given up on the idea of building my own wireless router, but I'd like to find good wireless card that can act as a wireless access point, has good support under FreeBSD, and can be connected to an external antenna or otherwise can provide as good a signal/connection to connected devices as a standalone router. Perhaps that's further down the road and more of a hobbiest project anyway. Right now I just need something that works.
